ABOUT HASSSAN
Situated at a
distance of 186 km from Bangalore, it is the headquarter of
the district known by the same name of the south Indian state
of Karnataka. The city was under the reign of different
kingdoms including Maurays, Kadambas, Chalukyas, Gangas,
Hoysalas and Vijayanagar empire. But it came into prominence
under the Hoysalas during 11th and 14th century AD. During
this period, the capital of the dynasty was at Dwarasamudra
and the ruins of the city can be seen scattered round the
towns called Halebid & Belur. Numerous ancient monuments
including temples built in the unique Hoyasala style
architecture are the major tourist attractions of this region

The temples of
Halebid and Belur stands as a mute testimony to the unique
architectural style, which attract tourists on a large scale.
Belur -
Located at a distance of 38 km from Hassan, the small town
Belur, offers several temples, which are some of the best
example of Hoysala architecture built in 12th century. The
intricate carvings on the walls and pillars of the temples are
spellbinding. The figures on the walls depict events from the
Hindu Mythology. Some of the major ancient monuments here are
the temple dedicated to Lord Chennakesava and some other
dedicated to Ganesha, goddess Durga, Lord Vishnu, the Goddess
Saraswati etc. Besides, there are a number of other temples as
well. These temples show the excellence of architecture of
Hoysala dynasty.
Halebid - It was the ancient capital of
Hoysala dynasty and is situated at a
distance of 30km from Hassan and 16km from Belur. Like those
of Belur, the temples of Halebid are the symbols of the rich
cultural heritage of Karnataka. Most prominent among them is
the ancient Shiva Temple built by the king Vishnuvardhana in
1121 AD. The temple has two Siva Lingas - the icon
representation of Lord Shiva. The walls are embellished with
some extraordinary carvings of various deities and figures of
human, animals & birds. These give the observer an insight
into various aspects of glorious past.

The nearest airports are Bangalore and Mangalore.
» By Rail -
The railway station in Hassan is connected to other major
junctions such as Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore.
» By Road -
Hassan is connected by road services to Bangalore (222 km) and
Mangalore (194 km). Buses ply in regular intervals to these
cities.
